I use coconut oil all day long. I use it as moisturizer, cuticle oil, hair de-frizzifier (I just made that word up!), and makeup remover. It is my go-to beauty product for so many things! It's also a wonderful substitute for butter in baking that gives the same buttery, melt-in-your-mouth sensation. (A few of my favorite coconut-oil-containing recipes: The Best Vegan Chocolate Cake, Raw Chocolates, and Mini Cheesecake Bites).
2. Tea tree oil
Tea tree oil (like coconut oil) has about a million uses. I like to use it to spot-treat acne and for any kind of itchy skin rash. Interestingly, it takes away the itch of a bug bite AND bugs hate the smell, so they won't come back to bite you! Tea tree is so crucial for me during the Austin, Texas mosquito season.
3. Nutritional yeast
This is always a weird one for people to get on board with, but once you do - your life will be changed! Nutritional yeast or "nooch" as it is lovingly referred to in the health and wellness sphere, is an inactive yeast (different from brewer's yeast or active dry yeast) with a delicious, savory, cheesy flavor that I like to add to just about any salad, pasta, veggies, dip... ok pretty much anything that isn't dessert. Click here to learn more about it. (A few of my favorite nutritional-yeast-containing recipes: Low-Fat Vegan Cheeze Dip, Quick Cheesy Sauce, and Vegan Quiche.)
4. Liquid stevia extract
You know that aftertaste that some complain about with stevia in powdered form? Anyone I have met who has been "one of those people" has not been able to detect the stevia aftertaste with the liquid extract. Liquid stevia is a super-sweet, zero-calorie, low-glycemic sugar substitute that comes from the stevia plant. I use it to sweeten tea, coffee, overnight oats, and in almost all of my baked goods.
5. My water bottle
I take my water bottle with me everywhere I go. Anyone who knows me can attest to this - my 1-liter purple Camelback water bottle is right by my side about 95% of the time. I even bought a large purse so I would be able to fit it in and take it into movie theaters (shhh don't tell!). Being hydrated is so important for energy and detoxification. My dad refers to water as "the elixir of life," and I completely agree. I drink at least 2 liters a day, but usually closer to 3.
