The BEST & simplest Kidney Bean Burgers! Made with only 6 simple, wholesome ingredients. Vegan, gluten-free, oil-free, and low-fat!
I originally created this recipe back in July 2014, but I have given it a little makeover! Purely cosmetic. This is one of my favorite recipes of all time, so I thought it's original photos need some revamping.
My go-to Bean Burgers from Day 1...
Not only is this Kidney Bean Burger one of MY favorite recipes, it is actually the first recipe I give to anyone who approaches me wanting to transition to a plant-based diet (or just incorporate more plant-based foods).
There are a million reasons why this Kidney Bean Burgers recipe is my go-to such as:
- It is ridiculously easy to make (only 6 ingredients!), and is not one of those recipes where you're going to be slaving away in the kitchen and be so annoyed that you deem veganism way too much work to ever adopt into your lifestyle.
- They are super healthy, but don't taste healthy.
- Along those lines, they are vegan, gluten-free, oil-free, and fat-free, making them perfect for pretty much any dietary restriction!
- They are perfectly spiced and full of flavor!
- They don't fall apart.
- They will definitely fill you up! Another common issue with people transitioning to a more plant-based lifestyle is they complain they never feel full. You'll feel full with these - promise!
Anyway, although I revamped the photos, this recipe stayed 100% the same as when it was originally created because it is literally PERFECT! You will love them.

Annie
Cauliflower "chicken" wings coming very soon!! And maybe we'll have another sampling soon too 🙂
Aicha
Yay, finally a super easy and simple ingredient burger that looks amazing! Can't wait to try out the recipe with my own twists 🙂 Thanks!
Annie
Yes! I'd love to hear about the additions/subtractions you make!
Kassidy
Are these supposed to be kind of mushy?
Annie
No, they shouldn't be! I would bake them a little longer if they are mushy 🙂
Christina
I made these for dinner the other night. They turned out great! I appreciate this recipe because it made tasty veggie burgers out of just a few ingredients that I already had on hand. Most veggie burger recipes that I've seen require a long, complicated list of ingredients, and an hour or more to prepare. Thank you for the great recipe! I know that I will make these many times over.
Annie
YAY!!! This comment totally made my day 🙂 I am so happy you enjoyed them. This is one of my favorite recipes of all time! I make these burgers often and freeze extras for later.
Elizabeth
Annie, thanks for the recipe. Have not made as yet, but will be doing so soon . Just paid $12 for 6 gluten-free vegan burgers. Will definitely be saving money making these
valerie
i made these the other night for dinner and thought they were good. i guess i was hoping they would be excellent or a lot better because of the "worlds best bean burger" pin they had describing them on pinterest. as a vegan i've made a LOT of bean burgers/veggie burgers in my time and i would say they are pretty average of most other ones, even that they were crumbly and mushy in texture. but i guess that is the nature of plant based burgers. BUT! i will say that they are very budget/time friendly and as a mama of a toddler I greatly appreciate that 🙂 thanks so much for the quick and easy recipe!
Annie
I'm sorry they didn't live up to what you were expecting!!! I soooo love these and totally crave them. Wondering if maybe baking them for longer would have helped the crumbly-ness at least 🙂
Thanks for your comment and for trying these out!!
Warmly,
Annie
Tish
So I can use no salt added beans or better yet make my own with no salt?
Annie
Yes, definitely!! Then I would just use salt to taste if necessary 🙂
Priscilla
Would this recipe also work with black beans?
Annie
Yes, definitely!
Sara
Love the blissfully short ingredients list. Cooking vegan can be exhausting :p
Would these be OK in the fridge for a week do you think?
Annie
Yes, definitely will last in the fridge 🙂 I also freeze a batch when I make these! Enjoy!
Angela
I think using mason jars to freeze and cook would help hold the shape. I can't wait to try because my bf doesn't like black beans.
Lesley
Yup, these are amazing. I made them last night and they were a hit with my whole fam!
Annie
Hi Lesley! YAY that makes me so happy! So glad y'all enjoyed them 🙂
Ken
Have you ever tried to freeze? Hoping to be able to cook from frozen on the grill.
Annie
Hi Ken! They freeze well but I have never tried actually grilling them. Would love to know how they turn out if you give it a try! 🙂
Erin
I put the burgers on the BBQ on medium heat and they were delicious! I had to cook them a bit longer than expected so that they weren't mushy - maybe 10 mins per side (?). Make sure to put some oil or cooking spray on the grill first so that they don't stick. I also did not have onion powder so I blended a chunk of white onion and added it to the mix and it was still very flavourful. Great recipe and will definitely be making again soon!
Chris
Don't have gluten free oats. Any suitable substitutes?
Annie
Do you have regular (not gluten-free) quick oats? I'm not really sure what else would work because I haven't tried them any other way. If you aren't sensitive to gluten there's no reason why regular oats wouldn't work 🙂 If you don't have oats, I imagine flour would work, too, but I haven't tried it so I don't know for sure!
suzanne
Delicious! I coated the burger with cornmeal prior to cooking and added an extra 5 minutes to the cook time. Thank you so much for making such an easy and yummy recipe!! Easy & yummy is much appreciated!! <3
Annie
Hi Suzanne! Thanks so much for your sweet comment! Coating with cornmeal sounds like it would make this burger extra crispy and delicious - yum! So glad you enjoyed 🙂
Chris
Hello! Made these quick for lunch -- this was the recipe I settled on because it was simple and looked nice. I added some dried falafel mix to it because the batter looked a bit mushy (my fault, I don't measure things). Baked for a little longer than instructed and they turned out tasty. Thanks for the great base!
Annie
Hi Chris! Adding falafel mix sounds delish! So glad you liked the recipe and thanks for the feedback about increasing baking time 🙂
RW
Darn, I hate catsup so I can't make these. I wonder if something else would work as a substitution.
Annie
I would try just plain tomato sauce if you can tolerate that. In the finished product I don't think you will be able to detect the ketchup/tomato taste! If you don't want to try that, maybe try adding more mustard in its place. I can't vouch for it, though, since I've never tried it!
Kate @ Kate Lives Healthy
Thanks so much for the super simple recipe. I made these the other day and they were fabulous. I subbed out the garlic and onion powder as I didn't have them and added in some BBQ sauce. I cooked them and then froze the extras. Reheated them later in the week for a quick dinner. They froze and thawed perfectly. Just microwaved them for 1-2 min till warm and served.
Annie
Yay! So glad you liked the recipe. I bet BBQ sauce as an addition would be delish! I'lll have to try it 🙂
Brenda
Do the 133 calories include the bun or just the patty please?
Thanks
Annie
Hi Brenda! The 133 is for the patty only (since all buns are different, I wasn't sure what to use to calculate that!). If you're trying to save some calories, I LOVE this inside a lettuce wrap with some of my vegan coleslaw inside 🙂
Brenda
Thanks a lot!! 🙂
Tori
hi annie!
just tried these and they're awesome, especially for a quick throw-together meal. i've been looking for an easy burger recipe that actually tastes good for absolute ages, and this does the trick! thanks so much for sharing!
Annie
Hi Tori! Yay! So glad you liked these 🙂 This is one of my all-time favorite recipes!
Charley
Hi, sounds delicious, can I also cook these in a frying pan?
Annie
Hi Charley! I've never tried that, so I'm not really sure - sorry I couldn't be more help! I'm not sure if they would fall apart that way.
Charley
Thanks for your response Annie, I guess i’ll bake half in the oven and half in the frying pan, will let you know how they work out! 🙂
Annie
That sounds great - I'd love to know!!! Thanks so much 🙂
Sue Floyd
These bean burgers were quick and easy. Ten minutes for us made them too dry. I had to use gluten free oats though, maybe that made the difference. Over all we liked them. We're going to try some different herbs and spices, like smoke salt or paprika. My husband and I agreed that we would make them again which means this is not a throw away recipe.
Annie
Husband-approved is always a success in my book!!! Thank you for your comment, Sue! The addition of more spices sounds wonderful.
Sarah
This is the first vegan burger I've ever made, I added in a little BBQ sauce, smoked paprika, and a sprinkle of italian breadcrumbs to thicken it a bit more after adding the BBQ sauce. They were pretty dang good! Will definitely save this recipe and make again 🙂
Annie
Hi Sarah!! So happy you liked the recipe! Your additions sound fantastic 🙂 Thanks for your comment!
Colleen
Annie, great information, very impressed. Can’t wait to try these burgers and all your other recipes. Keep up the good work. Colleen

Old dog trying to learn new tricks...would love a way to print the recipe only. Like having a cookbook that I can look through and have recipes close that we love. If you can find a way to do this would be great. Thanks.
Annie Markowitz
Hi Gina!! I'm working on it! Eventually all posts will have a print option. I'm going through one-by-one to add the option. I've added it to this one, just for you! Hope you enjoy!

Hi..these sound great..I'm not sure where you are based, but where can i find vegan gluten free burger rolls in Sydney, Australia?
Annie Markowitz
Hi there! I'm not sure where you can find them - I'm sorry! I would check a health food store if there is one in your area 🙂
Lindsay Kordecki
I made a huge put full of kidney beans from scratch and wasn't sure what to make out of it. Then I found this recipe! I just made them and they were soooo tasty. I love the simplicity of them! I didn't have Garlic Salt or Onion Powder so I just used onion and garlic. I blended everything in a food processor. Thank you for the recipe!
Annie Markowitz
YAY!! So happy you liked this recipe!! Thank you so much for your comment, Lindsay!
Pongodhall
I like to crush 3/4 walnuts in there
